He was one of the best cold case detectives in the country. And he was an angry atheist for 35 years. He started out by getting a Master’s degree in Architecture from UCLA. He switched careers by becoming a police officer and then a detective for 25 years. He was an evidentialist. His law enforcement experience lead to his belief that truth was tied directly to evidence. His assignments included SWAT, gang detail, undercover & robbery homicide. He was a founding member of the Torrance, California Police Department’s Cold Case Homicide unit. Several of his cases were on Dateline, Court TV, 48 hours & Fox TV.
He was passionate in his opposition to Christianity. He enjoyed “debating” other Christian officers but often found them to be ill-prepared in defending what they believed. The interesting thing is that he NEVER really examined the evidence for Christianity himself. Most atheists are like this. They know what they believe and why they believe it but they don’t know the evidence that supports Christianity. He rarely attended church with his wife but in the early 1990’s, a pastor’s sermon peaked his interest and he decided to investigate its claims from a detective’s view. Since the evidence was 2,000 years old, this was a REALLY cold case.
As he looked at the evidence from a detective’s viewpoint, he realized that it was all stacking up in one direction. He also realized that, in the past, he had been demanding proofs of Christianity that he wouldn’t apply to his own worldview. His investigation was a gradual process that was aided by the writings of Lee Strobel and Dr. Sean McDowell (Josh McDowell’s son). After some more research, he realized he had a decision to make. In 1996, he became a follower of Jesus Christ. He just couldn’t deny the evidence for Christianity. He then went on the get a Master’s degree in Theology from Golden Gate Baptist Theological Seminary. He served as a youth pastor and a church planter. He is using his gifts to glorify God. How are you using your gifts for God’s Kingdom?
