Have you ever watched these “psychic” TV shows? There’s one called “The Pet Psychic”, where Sonja Fitzpatrick tells pet owners what their pet was thinking about them. One cat owner came to the Pet Psychic. She said she noticed her cat was more aloof lately and wondered why this was. After communicating with the cat for a few seconds, Sonja told the pet owner that the cat felt slighted by her owner. The cat felt that the owner hadn’t spent as much time with her lately. Of course, the cat owner was aghast and vowed to spend more time with her cat. She apologized to the cat for not spending as much time with her as she should have. Now there is absolutely no proof whatsoever that this was what the cat was thinking (can cats even think?). Even if cats can think, there’s no proof that this Pet Psychic can actually tell what the cat was thinking. What if the cat’s thoughts are operating on an entirely different wavelength than what this Pet Psychic can actually receive? Even if they were operating on the same wavelength, what kind of receptor does this lady have to interpret these brain waves? How does she know these brain waves are coming from the cat? Might they be from an audience member? Or a man two blocks away that’s thinking how his wife doesn’t pay attention to him?
One day I turned into the Jonathan Edwards show. He is a far cry from the 18th century preacher of the same name, who was instrumental in the 2nd Great Awakening in America. This Jonathan Edwards is a medium, which means he communicates with dead people. I’d seen his show a few times before, just to stay current on what was happening in the psychic world. I would only watch it for 5-10 minutes at a time. This time, a lady talked with John about her dead husband. She had treated him terribly when he was alive. Now that he was dead, she realized how wrong she’d been. Was there any way John could contact him to let him know how sorry she was. I felt for this lady because she had realized too late how badly she had treated her husband while he was alive. Her heart was really breaking over this. John communicated with him for a minute and then answered the wife. Yes, her husband realized that she had a very bad childhood and this was why she was the way she was. Yes, he forgave her. She broke down and cried upon hearing this.
Because the bible forbids any kind of communication between the living and the dead (Luke 16:27-31), I don’t believe John was communicating with her dead husband. He was communicating with a demon (2nd Corinthians 11:14-15). Have you ever noticed that John rarely gives people bad news? That his “spirits” always give people good, comforting, encouraging news? It seems like they’ll do anything to keep them away from seeking Jesus. False comfort, no matter how good it sounds, is still false comfort. John always puts a temporary band-aid on the problem. He never encourages people to seek real forgiveness from God. He never encourages people to seek God to transform their life. Its amazing the things people look for to solve their problems of guilt and conviction. They want to seek a quick fix rather than seeking a permanent solution (Matthew 7:7-11 & Romans 8:31-32).
The “darker” side of me wonders what would happen if the dead husband said that “No, I’m still ticked at how you treated me”. This lady wanted her guilt assuaged, not permanently dealt with. Only Jesus can wash away her guilt forever (Hebrews 9:13-14 & 10:10-12).
Is Jonathan Edwards a fake or does he really believe in what he’s doing? I don’t know and it really doesn’t matter. What matters is that God tells us not to have dealings with these “spirits” as they are really demons (1st Corinthians 10:20-21). We only need to look to Jesus for things like this (2nd Chronicles 7:14, Acts 17:27, Jeremiah 29:13 & Luke 11:9-10).
For His Kingdom,
