Were Hitler and Stalin Christians?

     Many atheists will point out that Hitler and Stalin were Christians. They do this to denigrate Christianity. They say that Hitler was a baptized catholic and that Stalin was studying for the Eastern Orthodoxy priesthood. But are their allegations accurate?

Hitler:
It’s true that Hitler was baptized as an infant. In 1904, he was confirmed in Roman Catholicism. His confirmation sponsor had to “drag the words out of him…almost as though the whole confirmation was repugnant to him.” Hitler never again attended Mass or received the sacraments after leaving home at 18 years old. As he was rising to power, he realized that he needed to make friends with the church. So, he made statements like…

     But when he came to power, the pretense was over. He said things like…

“The heaviest blow that ever struck humanity was the coming of Christianity…The deliberate lie in the matter of religion was introduced into the world by Christianity.”

From Goebbels Diaries, 12/29/1939:
“The Fuhrer is deeply religious though completely anti-Christian. He views Christianity as a symbol of decay.”

Stalin:

     He was raised in a Russian Orthodox family but his father beat him regularly. His mother wanted him to become a priest. He was expelled from one seminary and forced to leave another due to his acceptance of atheistic Marxism. He rejected his Christianity in favor of Marxism in his adult life. In 1928, when he was firmly in power, he launched his “Godless  Five Year Plan” to close churches. In 1929, he launched a new 5 day Soviet calendar. By eliminating weekends, it rendered Sunday worship hard to observe. This calendar lasted until 1940. He made some closed churches into “Museums of Atheism”.

He had much of the clergy shot or sent to labor camps when he solidified his power in the 1920’s and 1930’s. More than 85,000 priests were shot in 1937 alone. Before the Russian Revolution, there were about 46,000 churches. By 1939, there were fewer than 200. But a 1937 survey showed that 57% of Russians were religious, so Stalin’s belief proves misguided.
While he eventually let the Orthodox church exist after WWII, he kept it under strict control. He did not allow any other denominations to exist. Stalin was an atheist and a Marxist.

     Communist/Fascist governments cannot tolerate Christians because our freedom in Christ always spills over into other areas of our lives, like into the political area. Our allegiance is to Christ, not the state. This is why Christianity is so persecuted by Marxists/Totalitarian governments.

     Many atheists don’t distinguish between just talking a Christian game and actually living one. We all know people who think they are believers because they were baptized as an infant or they were born in America, etc. It takes more than words to be a believer in Jesus.
You cannot kill millions of people while claiming to be a Christian. Both Hitler and Stalin were also anti-semites, killing many, many Jews. It’s very clear to most rational people that Hitler talked positively about Christianity when he needed to but when he didn’t need to anymore, his true feelings came out. It’s obvious that Stalin’s hatred for Christianity was from his early years on.
